I’m certainly not a coffee connoisseur by any means but I do love a nice cup of coffee—typically in the morning after my breakfast. Along with the aromatic smell of a brewing pot, I enjoy the feeling of a warm mug in my hand while I sit alone on the front porch or in a comfy chair near the window, watching the world, in my own little world. It’s my carved out piece of time each morning to daydream, appreciate my surroundings, and ground myself for the day. It is a ritual of relaxation and rejuvenation.
A lot of research has been done, and continues to be conducted, to show the benefits of drinking coffee (in moderation, of course!). It appears that not only does it offer the stimulating boost you might need to get yourself going, but it could also help protect against type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and some forms of cancer. It’s also been found to lower rates of depression among women.
No wonder I look forward to my morning ritual so much.
For some, it’s not just about the taste or the caffeine. Being a coffee drinker truly is a lifestyle, one that is embraced by hundreds of cultures across the globe. Who doesn’t love hitting up a cool hip coffee shop with your bestie, lounging in comfy chairs with a fresh cup of java and great conversation? So good for the soul!
But not all coffee beans are created equal. Coffee beans are said to be one of the most heavily sprayed crops so it is important to be conscious of organic versus non-organic brands. Choosing coffee beans that are certified organic and fair trade is not only best for your own health and our environment, but it also ensures that trade workers are treated humanely.
So whatever your reason for drinking coffee, be sure to keep in mind that to reap the most health benefits, you should always drink in moderation, avoid adding too much sugar (if any at all), and always choose organic, fair trade brands.
As a small business owner, I’m always drawn to local and Canadian-run businesses. Today I’m drinking Kicking Horse Coffee. They’re 100% Certified Organic and Certified Fair Trade, from British Columbia but available all over the country. Check them out here!
And for those of you who don't like to drink coffee, you can still reap the benefits without taking a sip. Try this DIY recipe for a stimulating body scrub:
- ¼ cup organic ground coffee
- ¼ cup organic sugar
- ½ cup organic coconut/sunflower/olive oil
Feel free to enhance this recipe aromatically with organic vanilla extract, lavender essential oil, or a bit of honey.
Combine all ingredients to create a scrub. Stand in the shower or bath and starting from your feet, work in gentle circular motions all the way up towards your heart. Turn on the water and rinse down the drain. Easy peasy.
The coffee grinds will exfoliate and stimulate the skin, increasing blood flow and helping to reduce looseness and cellulite. The dual exfoliation of the sugar works with both enzymatic and gentle mechanical action to really get you smooth and soft, while the oil cleans and moisturizes. You will be left feeling and smelling absolutely divine. Enjoy!
